Finca Nueva Creación: Regenerative Agriculture and Agroecology in Humacao

At Levantando.org, we are pleased to introduce Finca Nueva Creación, a biodiverse and regenerative farm located in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Managed by a dedicated mother and her daughter on 10 acres of land, this farm stands as a prominent example of agroecological practices, focusing on sustainability and the regeneration of the local ecosystem.

Farming Practices: “At Finca Nueva Creación, we take an integrated approach to agriculture,” explain the farmers. The farm hosts a variety of animals, including chickens, geese, and sheep. These animals not only enrich life on the farm but also play a crucial role in the integrated management system. Chickens and geese assist in producing fresh eggs, while sheep contribute to pasture management and natural soil fertilization.

The orchard at Finca Nueva Creación features a mosaic of fruit trees and a vegetable garden, cultivated without chemicals and with sustainable practices. “We focus on producing diverse fruits and vegetables, providing a steady source of fresh and healthy food,” mention the farmers. Additionally, they use worm castings to enhance soil quality, maintaining rich and fertile land that promotes healthy plant growth.

Volunteer Day with Levantando.org: Levantando.org partnered with PR I Love You volunteer group. Recently, we had the privilege of organizing group for a volunteer day at Finca Nueva Creación. During this event, shared equipment like a motocultor tractor, chipper, trailer, and small hand tools provided by Levantando were used. “Together, volunteers and farmers worked diligently to clear trees, prepare land for new pastures and fruit tree planting, and conducted tasks such as painting the barn, building chicken feed troughs, and worm trays in the barn.”

Impact of Levantando.org: The support of Levantando.org has been instrumental in the development and sustainability of Finca Nueva Creación. Thanks to collaboration and resources provided, the farmers have significantly improved their agricultural practices and expanded production capabilities. “Community involvement and access to advanced tools and equipment have allowed our farm to thrive and continue to be a model of regenerative agriculture and agroecology in Puerto Rico,” they point out.

With continued support from Levantando.org, Finca Nueva Creación continues to grow and flourish, demonstrating the power of sustainable agriculture and community collaboration. “We are proud to be part of this initiative that promotes a healthier and more sustainable agricultural future for our island,” conclude the farmers.

Are you a commercial composter in Puerto Rico?

Please let us know at info@levantando.org so we can learn about you and let our network of growers and producers know about your product..

This laboratory testing is expensive. The lab tests run $375, plus overnight shipping with morning delivery of the sample on-ice runs another $100+. Staff time to navigate APHIS approval to ship compost to the US requires several hours of hoop-jumping. To the best of our knowledge, most commercial composters do not regularly test their products, which puts the risk of poor quality on the backs of growers. Levantando.org is pleased to be able to offer the testing and results as part of our mission to serve small, sustainable farmers and communities in Puerto Rico. If you would like to help defray these costs with a donation, your help is appreciated.
